QUILT QUEST DATES WERE - October 5 - 9, 2009 - at Riverview Hall
Children's Sewing Day was - October 10, 2009 - at Riverview Hall
Saturday, October 10th, was
cold and rainy. But inside Riverview Hall, the volunteers were ready, the
supplies were abundant and the sewing machines were threaded. Although the
number of young sewers was few, each one was a success story. Many thanks
to the Shreveport Sewing Center, Fabric Boutique, Ghee's and these fine
volunteers: Cath Callaway, Carol Shoul, Sandy Layfield, Cathy Ward, Julie
Bryan, Melanie and Steve Cobb, Holly Young, Jerrie Knutson, Misty Evans and Jack
Williams. Emma Michael, Ginney Michael's granddaughter won the Babylock
sewing machine provided by the Shreveport Sewing Center. Held each year on
the last day of the Red River Revel, Children's Sew Day is a hands-on activity
for children of all ages. The participants could dray a picture on to
muslin and then stitch it to another square of fabric on a real sewing machine.
Holly Young helped many of the children and Holly completed her first quilt top
that day. This year we added a new activity - the children could choose to
make a quick and easy tote to take with them. Thanks to all the volunteers
who helped cut and serge the totes this summer. Jeannine

ATTENTION: Girl Scout troops, neighbors, 4-H clubs, church youth groups, grandparents, parents, all guild members.
Do you come in contact with those who work with groups of children? We need to provide them information about Children's Sewing Day. A written review and CD with photos of last year's activity at the Revel has been developed. Tell us how many you need so you can pass it on to those who work with groups of children. Or put those youth leaders in touch with me.
Children's Sewing Day, on the last day of Red River Revel, is a great field trip for groups. It's an opportunity to draw pictures onto fabric squares, arrange the squares on a design board and stitch squares together on a sewing machine. It's a fun day for children and adults! No age limit! Last year, our youngest artist was 3 years old. The teenagers and young adults had as much fun as the kids!
Many of you are familiar with QuiltQuest - during the five days immediately following our quilt show, guild volunteers work with 7,500 area 4th grade students. The children draw a picture that would cheer up a sick child onto a muslin square. Then, throughout the year, guild members sew children's quilts using the artful squares. The children are exposed to art, sewing and community service.
Children's Sewing Day takes QuiltQuest full circle: the young participants may actually stitch squares together on a sewing machine. The goal is to spark children's interest in sewing. Local merchants provide sewing machines and volunteers work directly with the children.
