Grow Your Garden Applique Class

Raw-edge Applique’ Workshop

August 24, 2024 (Cost $60.00 per person {includes pattern})

This beautiful wall-hanging is a fun way to learn about raw-edge applique. The gorgeous garden scene will be uniquely your own despite using the same patterns as other students because you choose the colors and locations of the pattern pieces.

You’ll learn techniques for using Steam-a-Seam 2 fabric adhesive to create quilts that are uniquely your own. You will “grow” your flower garden using the stems, leaves, and petal patterns in your pattern kit. Though you may not get through all of the patterns, you’ll learn how to apply the theories of creating a variety of flowers, and then let your imagination blossom. If time permits, students will sandwich the quilt and delve into ideas for quilting and thread play.

You Will Learn:

1. basics of applique—how to apply and use (Steam-a-Seam 2) adhesive

2. order of applique—farthest to nearest design

3. color theory and odd numbers concerning flowers

4. using pattern pieces to create stems, leaves, and a variety of flowers

5. using free-hand cutting to create flowers

6. using straight, zigzag, and decorative stitches in applique

Vintage Linens Workshop

October 12 (Costs $20 per person.)

To make this quilt, (67 by 83 inches) you will need about 35 vintage pieces. These pieces can be from dresser scarves, cross stitch, pillow cases, handkerchiefs, aprons, doilies, table cloths, linen calendars, lace strips, dish towels, curtains… I especially love embroidered pieces but keep in mind that you need neutral pieces like off-white doilies and lace and napkins, as well. You also need different sizes and shapes to make your quilt interesting. If every piece is a “statement” piece, the viewer will be overwhelmed. You will probably be using only parts of the pieces you choose. Damaged items can also be used since you can appliqué lace over a hole or cut around problem areas. Orphan quilt blocks can also be included if the colors are right. But these are some of the things we will discuss.

In the workshop we will concentrate on completing one section. You will learn the process and be able to complete your quilt on your own. If you are only going to make a table runner or wall hanging, you will only need about five vintage pieces. So basically, you only need to have about five vintage pieces to take the workshop.

Along with your vintage pieces, you will need complimentary fabrics. You need some solid colors light and dark, and maybe three prints with different scales.
